review 1: Revenge. Survival. May/December romance (maybe), serial killer, time travel, good writing. We have been all these places before, but here we are enmeshed in all of them at once. Not a book to plop into a category, 'The Shining Girls' gives us a plucky heroine and twisty turns wrapped in a bit of suspense, a splash of mystery and a soupcon of incredulity. Once you suspend disbelief you should be well and truly hooked. My one question, which I have not fully answered, is....why? Why introduce the weird stuff instead of writing a straightforward revenge whodunit? My guess is that that serial killer theme is getting pretty stale and the off the wall treatment is interesting and adds 'fantasy and science fiction' elements. I guess that is as good as any explanation (other... more than this is what Lauren Beukes wanted to write and so that is what she did--her prerogative). After all, I read it and it isRecommended.
review 2: Lauren Beukes, a highly acclaimed South African author, has sold the rights to The Shining Girls, and her latest book, Broken Monsters. Well done!I found The Shining Girls easy to read, but difficult to rate. The writing style is original, and draws you in quickly. The plot is excellent, a little grim, not for the squeamish. You can tell that from the blurb, which put me off reading initially. I liked Kirby and really liked Dan. I do not enjoy time travel in a novel as a rule. I can suspend my disbelief, that is not the problem. I think the concept of time travel makes it too easy for authors to resolve plot issues, and cheat on story lines, and I therefore find it deeply unsatisfying (with two exceptions). Here, I didn't think it was necessary to the plot. I also think if you are going to use it, you have to have some constraints, or "rules" or some form of "explanation". Not so here. That said, the story moved, the setting was well researched, and gave light to the words, and this was a page turner which I won't forget. A solid 3.5 stars, rounded up because I admire Lauren Beukes for the writing. less

Great book. A murder mystery with a sci fi twist. I highly recommend it.
