review 1: Pleased to find this available for a 1 day sale and read for my JUST FOR FUN challenge from Lori...added to the A-Z and Around the World challenges as well..Ms Eakes offers well researched stories accurate to the era, this one being Regency. Tidbits of historical information are added to story details that increase enjoyment of reading. Unfortunately, for me the story had too much volleying of "I love you - I don't love you" from one moment to the next. It frustrated me as a reader. Especially as the Christian beliefs of the main character, used to support the attitudes and actions, were not well grounded theologically and which I find off-putting and misleading in influence for any readers who don't otherwise know foundational faith and beliefs.I liked the concluding sc... moreenes for their tenderness and emotional response. I only hoped for more of that brilliance throughout the novel. Having experienced better, I've come to expect it from this favourite author.
review 2: I really wanted to like this book because the setting was so original: a regency female who is interested in ballooning and very knowledgeable and insightful about the workings of balloon flight. I even liked the idea of losing a fiancee because of careless behaviors, and having to work their way back to each other. Unfortunately, I found the telling of the story to be tedious. The characters were indecisive and whined about the same problem incessantly. There was alot of switching between settings with no real advancement of the plot and then everything wraps up so tidily in the last few pages. It was unsatisfying. less
