review 1: I skipped from an earlier book in the series to this one because my lovely husband put this on my Kindle for me. It really made me want to go back and read O Jerusalem and whichever other books the Hazr men pop up in. Even without knowing how specifically Holmes, Russell, and the Hazrs met, I really enjoyed this introduction to 1920s Morocco. It was interesting to follow Russell while she tried to regain her memories after receiving quite a head wound. I hope we see the mute child, Idir, again in another Mary Russell book. He was intriguing and seemed to be a Moroccan Baker Street irregular;)Sigh--off to read where I left off in the series, The Moor. Love these books!
review 2: I've been going through a Sherlock Holmes phase and picked this up quite by accident
... more. In 1994 Ms. King wrote The Beekeeper's Apprentice about a 15 year old girl who meets and befriends the retired 50+ year old Sherlock Holmes. Fast forward to Garment of Shadows (2014) - the first I've read in the series of 13 books - and we find that Holmes is married to said young woman. I hope he waits until she reaches the age of consent. The two seem matched in personality and interests, but I have an issue with their age difference - 5 to 10 years one way or the other is one thing, but 35 years? Perhaps he should have adopted her. I found this book entertaining, but I'm not certain I'm willing to read 12 more books to discover how/why Holmes ends up married to such a young woman. Or maybe I'm just jealous. less

Good book! Sometimes found it hard to follow - but not enough to keep me from wanting to continue.
