review 1: Great book really exciting and Tidhar's vision of Steampunk Paris is full of dodgy dealings, and undercover operations. This is the second book in a series but I barely even noticed, fine as a standalone read. The only problem I had with the writing was that the author had an odd and sometimes confusing way of showing who was speaking. I really enjoyed the little references to real and fictional Victorian people such as Harry Houdini and Irene Adler (she's head of Scotland Yard!) littering the book.
review 2: This book was like a protracted fever dream: disjointed bits of reality, horrors and frantic action. I found it very disturbing - but it kept me reading. I once had dengue fever twice within 3 months, and if I had spent all of my feverish waking moments wa... moretching bits of historical documentaries, B-movies of aliens and killers, and a smattering of old classic movies, I think the restless sleep in between would have been full of something like this. It was uncomfortable in the most addictive way. less
