review 1: In an alternate world, Osama Bin Laden is a character is a series of pulp fiction books and the terrorist acts committed by Al Qaeda have only occurred within their pages. Joe, a private detective in Vietnam, is hired to find the author of these novels for a mysterious women. Joe's search takes him to various points around the globe in search of the seemingly intangible. An interesting look at how the search can be easier than the answers they reveal.
review 2: Lavie Tidhar's novel delves into the collective experience of living in a world where global terrorism is a fact of life, by inventing one where such savagery can be found only in pulp novels featuring a vigilante mastermind named Osama bin Laden. His writing elides from hard-boiled detective fiction to
... moresurreal stream-of-consciousness, then back again, usually gracefully so. While the real emotional meat of the story doesn't kick in until near the end, the strangely familiar parallel universe the book inhabits kept me interested. Tidhar is brave enough not to answer every mystery or tidily wrap up the story, leaving the reader with many questions, which I'm certain was the author's aim. less
