review 1: Really enjoyed this epic, although it did drag a little in places. Two women forge a lifelong friendship when they share a lifeboat together and survive the sinking of the Titanic. May's husband and baby daughter have perished, but when an orphaned baby is rescued - alive - from the water, she is handed to May under the assumption the baby is hers. In her grief, May keeps the baby as her own, which sets up the threads of the storyline involving lifelong secrets and explores themes of identity and hope. Thoroughly enjoyable and thankfully not the gut-wrenching read I thought it might be.
review 2: I think this book did a good job of twining the story of the Titanic with a narrative which moved past the event while still carrying it along with it. It is long
... moreand at times it feels almost too long but that is offset with lovely moments of strength, love and great writing which redeem any negatives I can think of. Certain plot points didn't quite go the way I wanted them to but then I think there are positive points to a plot that doesn't give you everything you want it to. Overall a good read. less
