review 1: The Girl Under the Olive Tree got harder and harder to put down. Leah Fleming gives a history lesson along with a story, it is well woven together. From the battle in Greece to Crete Penelope changes her life from a society deb to a nurse on the battle field. She witnesses and takes part in history during WWII. In 2001 she returns to Crete as an old woman no longer nursing but still saddened with old memories and old secrets. The back and forth is seamless, you're not left wondering where you are. I loved this book.
review 2: I seem to be in a war zone lately.. Is that the trend in new books? This is the second World War and about the Nazi occupation of Crete. The story is an excellent mix of fact and fiction as an elderly woman travels back to Crete wi
... moreth her grandchild and great grandchild to attend a memorial service for those killed in WWII. In flashbacks, Penny tells of her time during the war as a nurse. You see the travails of the Jews of Crete when Germany occupies the island and the bravery of the guerilla fighters. You also see the view of a young German officer who is torn between loyalty to his country and what he sees as the horrors of occupation and following orders. less
