Mr. Monk
review 1: I LOVE these Monk books! They are written by the same man who wrote the TV episodes so they flow just like an episode does. The story is told by Natalie and it's fun to see her thought process while she deals with Monk.SFPD has to let Monk go due to budget cuts. Then Monk discovers that he has had all of his money taken by a Ponzi scheme and his bank account is literally empty. Natalie goes above and beyond the call of duty by finding them several jobs in an attempt to generate some kind of income for the two of them. The results of these jobs are highly amusing.Of course there are murders to solve in the middle of all this. Potential witnesses in the Ponzi scheme prosecution start turning up dead and Monk is conviced that the Ponzi schemer is the culprit. The cops a... moreren't buying it though because not only was Monk one of the financial victims, but Mr. Ponzi dude is hooked up to a tamper-proof house arrest ankle bracelet. The fact that Monk is citing the man's athlete's foot as evidence that he is capable of murder doesn't help convince anyone either. If you enjoy the Monk series and/or a good mystery story then I highly recommend this book. It is a quick read, has a good mystery, and has amusing charm to boot.
review 2: I don't rate this novel four stars because it is an incrediblly good mystery. Oh, there are a number of those clever Sherlockian moments as Monk acts in time to stop a number of crimes in progress that otherwise would have gone undetected. I love it (as does his aide, Natalie) when Monk says "This is what happened," and then goes on to explain how the clever bad guy's alibi doesn't work. The real fun of this novel is watching Adrian Monk, the obssesive-compulsive defective detective, go through a number of challenges. First, he is fired by the city due to budget constraints. Then he discovers that he (along with a host of others) has been the victim on an elaborate ponzi scheme. Soon, he discovers that he is broke, and being evicted. On top of that (HORROR!) he discovers that the only brand of bottled water that he drinks is no longer being sold and despairs of dying slowly of thirst. Then, Natalie gets him a series of jobs-- working in a grocery store, a pizzeria, and a clothing store. Of course, all of these go wrong in Mr. Monk's inimitable style. Soon, we have Mr. Monk has nowhere to go except to the home of his dysfunctional, agoraphobic brother. He winds up there and unwittingly finds the puzzle pieces for the big murder and the big resolve. It is the fun we have along the way that made this novel such a joy to read. The writer captures these characters, familiar from the televison show, and enhances them in print. Every page is fun-filled. less
