Mr. Monk
review 1: Here's another great episode in the Monk series. Lee Goldberg continues to write fantastic Monk adventures that always bring a smile to my face or a chuckle. Goldberg has a deep understanding of the character (unlike many of the other television series related novelists out there- specifically the CSI series which really falls short).. I have yet to have read one of Mr. Goldberg's books that didn't read like an extended episode of the television program. And that's what makes this series so very, very good. This time, Monk is reunited with Sharona and Randy, in Summit, New Jersey, where Randy is now serving as the chief of police (and, we learn, interim mayor).. Monk is challenged to leave his comfort zone (okay, so when isn't he) and work as a consult in order to assist... more Disher in solving a rash of burglaries in the small city. For once, I was a bit ahead of our defective detective, not because the author spilled the beans and tried to write from the burglar's point of view (a personal pet peeve most of the time and I was glad the author chooses to avoid that writing trap) but simply because it was so obvious to me as the reader. I saw the clues, but did not feel cheated because I knew Adrian would put it all together soon, and he did, it just took a little longer than I expected. This sets the stage for more fun and more mystery solving and Monk, as always is a pure genius when it comes to solving the crime. Also fun was watching Monk spare with the owner of a store that specialized in selling items manufactured from excrement. Goldberg mentions the expensive coffee manufactured from beans that were eaten by a civet and then excreted and then gathered.. this coffee was also mentioned on a recent episode of Franklin and Bash. Monk's discomfort with this woman is challenged by her explanation of balanced recycling. The only part I didn't like about the novel was the very last paragraph, which ended with a cliff-hanger that threatens to throw the series completely off-track. I'm looking for the next book in the series because author Lee Goldberg has assured me that it takes right up where that one left off. I can't imagine the author taking the Monk canon in that direction and hope he does not. I love Mr. Monk's response to dealing with the TSA and his definition of an emergency being a store selling items made from excrement. This novel was another fun outing for Monk fans (Monkians). I am saddened to hear that Lee Goldberg will not be penning anynmore of these novels. He has suggested another writer has taken over the series.. I'll give that author a shot, but can anybody write Monk like Lee Goldberg? I rather doubt it.
review 2: Another successful installment for the Obsessive-Compulsive Detective and his assistant, Natalie. For avid reader's and faithful followers of Adrian Monk, some disappointment was inevitable when Randy left San Francisco to live with Sharona on the other side of the country. But never fear, they're back in the story, as Adrian and Natalie spend a few weeks in New Jersey to give a hand solving crimes. After a fantastic run on television, and twelve previous books, the charm and intrigue have not faded. The crimes in this book are, as usual, very interesting, seemingly unsolvable. Add Adrian Monk, and you'll find yourself saying, "Of course, why didn't I see that?"There are a couple of surprises in this story. One that puts Monk in a situation that makes you smile and cheer for the mentally skewed detective; another that will challenge everything you thought you knew about the man; and yet another that leaves you wondering about the future of Adrian Monk.If II have anything in the form of negative criticism, it is the same as the other Monk books. I will simply say that, especially for fans of the show, Lee Goldberg has given dialogue to Monk that is very uncharacteristic of Tony Shaloub's TV presence. less

I loved it! I almost felt like I was watching a new episode instead of reading a book.

It is great to see Natalie getting more involved in the police side of things.

It was hideous. Not like the characters at all. Couldn't finish it.
