review 1: Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.5 stars... I loved this book! It had earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ... moreASAP.
review 2: The most interesting thing about Ghostly Paws (at least for me) is that as a paranormal cozy mystery, much of the paranormal is happening around Whilhemina without her knowledge. She sees ghosts, but that is the extent of her beliefs. Even when she sees the effects of her best friend's magical teas, she maintains a level of denial -- not about the effect, but about the magic. However, it's not an annoying denial because she goes with the flow rather than resisting it. This goes for her relationship with her cat, Pandora, as well. Cat lovers know that felines have a special ability to have one foot in and one foot out of this reality. I love how Dobbs portrays this in the many cats in the book, and how Pandora is actively involved in the murder investigation. I also appreciated how the mundane, muggle mystery grew into a paranormal mystery. Wilhelmina makes some mistakes in her investigation, but it made her more human for me. It also served to reveal some surprisingly compassionate aspects of secondary and tertiary characters that were unexpected. There is also a good versus evil theme in Ghostly Paws. Though I don't usually like simplistic black and white thinking, the varying motivations and characteristics of the "evil" created grey areas that are more in line with real life. Finally, the romance aspect needed to be more "earned" in my opinion, but the fact that it was so funny more than made up for it. less
