review 1: this is a picture book that tells the story through 13, words: bird, despondent, cake, dog, busy, convertible, goat, hat, haberdashery, scarlet, baby, panache, and mezzo-soprano. This book is good for students who are learning vocabulary words. Since the book lists the words and gives examples on how to use them, children could learn both how to spell them and how to use them in writing. A teaching idea would be to have students create their own book out of 5-10 vocabulary words.Snicket, L., & Kalman, M. (2010). 13 words. New York, NY: Harper.
review 2: This is about a despondent bird who's friend, a dog, tries to cheer him! The bird eats cake, paint a 11 ladders 10 colors, wears a hat, enjoys a song sung by a mezzo-soprano... but nothing will cheer the bird up
... more! Perhaps he is suffering from major depression. To write this book, I think Lemony Snicket pulled out a dictionary, flipped to a random page, and pointed at a random word - thirteen times - and then composed a story. This sort of surrealist exercise led to a bizarre story, with obscure vocab and the art is cool. Swell! less

A whole story about 13 words to introduce kids, with some that are too difficult for kids.
