review 1: Overall, an enjoyable read, with a likeable and engaging female lead. The mystery wasn't as mysterious as it could have been, and the whodunit portion was pretty transparent, but I was still eager to read to the end to see all the threads come together. The author avoided being exploitive about the subject matter (teenage prostitution), but sometimes the avoidance came off as timid writing so as not to inflame delicate sensibilities. Using a less delicate touch and going a little gritty would have given the book more impact. There were a few recycled phrases that came across as clunky, as they were employed by disparate characters at disparate point in the narrative, but didn't feel right on the tongues of some characters or were simply odd in the situation ("...line forms... more to the right..."). Likewise, certain phrases came up as being more editorial that character derived - when the character thinks to herself "...no wonder they had no respect for authority." it comes across as a metacommentary than the character's thought, particularly because it's a refrain mentioned several times. I get it, the author is making this idea of rebellion and youth, and the culture that creates it, a deeper theme in the book. Fair enough, but trust the reader to pick it up within the context of the story - don't beat us over the head with it.Still, the thrill of the investigation kept me reading, and while the who was pretty easily sussed, there was some more meat as to the why, and that was engaging. I thought this was an enjoyable read. Not a masterpiece, by any means, but a good, solid, fun time.
review 2: I was drawn to it because it takes place where I grew up. Sure, I knew everyone's exact location but it was creepy too. The story line was on point with a situation that had occurred several years ago, not nearly as dramatic though.I don't read too many murder/mystery books but this one seems all over the place. There must of been a million characters in this book. I had to keep going back to figure who was who. Sometimes I wish I could just stop reading a book, but by some force I just HAVE to find out what happens. The murder was solved, the end. less
