review 1: I am really enjoying this series. Chief Kate Burkholder is investigating a series of brutal murders and attacks of the Amish. Are they related? Frustration grows as the Amish are not very helpful to the police, preferring to deal with things in their own way. Kate uncovers some very disturbing behaviour by some Amish teenagers and things get increasingly tense. The book illustrates the difficulties of trying to live "separately" in these times and the pressure it can put on young adults trying to find their place in the world - in this case with tragic consequences.
review 2: I didn't enjoy this one as much as the others. It went on and on and on and on and on and on and on and ON about Kate Burkholder's feelings. She was the chief of police. Her feelings were ... morea good 1/4 of the entire story. I really enjoyed her character in the beginning but the more I read, the more annoying and cliche she became...classic "broken" and troubled character always battling her never ending feelings. Get to the plot already! Then her boyfriend, agent John Tomasetti, was the equally annoying classic cliche bad boy cop, broken and troubled as well. And the never ending talk about alcohol drove me to distraction. We get it. They're broken characters that have to drown in alcohol REPEATEDLY. I was so disappointed with this one because I liked this series so much! The rest of the story was okay and there was something about it that I liked enough to make me want to continue with the series. 2 1/2 stars. less
