review 1: [library audiobook, no financial reason to finish; plot summary elsewhere]This was almost a 5, but the deduction was for the unreality of the last scene, where Burkholder is allowed to do things she never would have been allowed to do.Story takes place in Coshocton County, where I have been. The realistic bleakness of the rural landscape dotted by farms, minimal homes, some factories and populated by Amish is matched by the bleakness of the lives depicted in the story.The Burkholder character is attractive as a troubled escapee from the thralls of the religious fundamentalism of Amish life. The complexity of the two plots keeps interest in a story otherwise encumbered by too much introspection.

When the parents and an uncle are found dead in their barn, it appears to be a gruesome accident: methane gas asphyxiation caused by a poorly ventilated cesspit.
