review 1: This book is part of a cop series. The lead character, a woman, is the chief of police in a small town. What's interesting is that she is a lapsed Mennonite. What is not interesting is the gruesome, CSI-style details of the murders she investigates. I listened to it as an audio book and finished it; I definitely wanted to find out "who done it." But I'm not intending to carry on with the series - too gory for me and the writing is not good enough to outshine that factor.
review 2: 1.5 stars because I only give 1 star to books I actively hate. This was... bad, though. I don't know much about law enforcement but this lady seems pretty incompetent several times throughout the book, which can't decide if it's a romance or a police procedural/mystery. Neither asp
... moreect is done well. You barely get to know any characters so when it's revealed "whodunit" it's very anti-climactic. The book barely builds any momentum, stopping every few chapters to check in with Kate's love interest, for no apparent reason. So many moments or subplots go absolutely nowhere. Dialog often stinks (paraphrasing slightly but... "Kate, does this have anything to do with what happened to you 17 years ago?") - beyond clunky. It references the previous book's events often but never fully recaps them so it was confusing to me, who hadn't read the first once (admittedly, that's my fault) - but it could either re-cap those moments less or just go on and explain them all. less
