review 1: This book as an amazing setting where war had happened. 2 Stories of how small kids suffered everyday on their run from war and to search for water. This book has showed me what other experiences in life had never showed me before. I am surprised at how children were treated in war zones before and how different tribes could never be in peace and always fight because this is something that still happens today. This book has compared two little kids from when they were young to now. One story was set in the 19s while the second story was set in 2008. This book has been in my top 10 books of all times. I would like to recommend this book to people who love historical fiction as well as realistic fiction and also people who like auto biographies because these stories are rea... morel and they are published for us to know what is going on it the world and for us to help these problems improve.
review 2: This story is about two eleven year olds, one boy named Salva and one girl named Nya. The story starts out in 1985 with Salva in Sudan being separated from his family. Salva makes his way to Ethiopia traveling from one refugee camp to another. Along the way he witnesses his Uncle’s death, lion attacks, alligator killings and war, lots of war. Salva finally makes his way to Ethiopia, decides to stay at this camp and learns English from a man at the camp. Salva becomes aware of his chances to go to America and be adopted by an American family. After years of waiting Salva is finally sent to Rochester, New York. He is exposed to electricity and running water for the first time. The weather is also a big change for Salva. But, Salva doesn’t stay in New York, after receiving an email from a cousin informing Salva that his father was alive and in a hospital back East; Salva tells his adoptive parents and makes the trip to see his father. Salva is ecstatic to find out that his mother, brother and sister are alive and well in Sudan. Salva eventually makes plans to go back to Sudan and starts a nonprofit organization to build clean wells so that his people can have clean, fresh water conveniently close to home. In this process Salva meets Nya, who has been living in Sudan this whole time struggling with not having clean water provide for her family. This book was good at transporting the reader back in time and sharing a young boys journey through the wilderness to safety without his parents or family. Even though most of the book is hard to fathom and may not be easy for a young reader to build connections with, there are those elements of humanity that are depicted, like missing family, fear, loss, and basic everyday needs. The book does a good job relating to young people. less
