review 1: This is the story about how keeping secrets ruins an innocent man's life. I love the concept of finding an old photo and weaving a story around it. Lis Wiehl has such a unique background, that it is almost obvious this is the story she would write. I was frustrated, though, by this book - there is so much potential for developing many of the threads - WHY did the sister fail to deliver the package that could have freed Leonard fifty years earlier? There were so many elements - the father-daughter relationship, the racial tension, the government secrecy - which made for an interesting story - but which could have been developed further. I guess for me, it was pretty basic - there were many more layers of character development and story details that could have helped shape... more the story ore completely. I tend to lose interest in a "mystery' when the culprit is introduced in chapter 2 - kinda anticlimactic. This isn't a spoiler, because the book doesn't give any other options for who the real killer was - the only question is 'why?" But then Stanley Blackstone is such a despicable character, that he practically doesn't need a reason.
review 2: This book had too many wild leaps and assumptions for me to truly enjoy it. From a socio-historical viewpoint, this book does portray the issues of race and discrimination in a realistic light, but the "mystery" was too muddled for me to enjoy. The author tried to introduce too many characters (such as the journalist in New York and the mother of the second little girl) as a convenient tool for revealing the evidence and path to resolving the mystery. I think the book could have been more straightforward and the mystery a little less confusing. less
