review 1: I picked this book up randomly when I was browsing the library stacks and it looked interesting and like a book I would enjoy. Jojo Moyes had written a short review on the back of the book which also caught my eye because I love her as an author. This book was pretty good and I would have given it a 3.5 stars if GoodReads allowed for that rating. I thought the author did a good job with characterization; I really felt strongly about the characters she created and had a definite reaction to them. I was rooting for Lydia and Dean, and I really disliked Robyn. Robyn's holier-than-thou attitude really annoyed me and I wanted to reach through the pages and slap her! I also did not feel like her relationship with Jack, at her age, was all that believable. I was glad to se... moree that Robyn eventually grew up a bit and changed her ways, but I felt that she was still a bit haughty in the end. I felt for Daniel and Maggie and I had hoped that Maggie would get a new start with Marc, even if that is a bit morbid. The children's reaction to meeting their father was a little disturbing to me because they seemed to not even like him...? I know that they never knew the man that had given them life and they had their own families, but still, he was their biological dad. I'm glad that they were able to meet him before he passed away but they seemed very cavalier about his death. I would think that it would be a bigger deal to them, losing their real father without getting any answers from him. Overall, I did enjoy the book and was pleasantly surprised by the author's writing style and different characters. I would probably try another one of her novels as this one was an enjoyable read.
review 2: I love Lisa Jewell and this latest book was certainly no disappointment. The plot focuses around sperm donation and the consequences of it and follows the three children fathered by the same sperm donor. The plot is enjoyable and yet tinged with sadness due to the added factor that the donor father is dying in a hospice. The characters are easy to relate to and you feel their pain and joy at the discovery of their background and meeting up with each other and their donor father. Some people have commented saying it is too cheesy and whilst I agree that it is that is one of the main elements that makes it utterly devourable. The book is written in a style that is becoming increasingly popular with the chapters telling the story from each of the characters in turn and whilst I enjoy this style when a chapter ends on a cliffhanger and then you have to wait three chapters before returning to the character and finding out what happened it is frustrating but this made me read it quicker as I needed to find out what had happened. Overall this is a must read for any chick lit fans. less
