review 1: Gosh, I liked this book well enough. I finished it a few days ago and have been very busy ever since. Now? I just remember it was kinda sweet, and silly in parts... particularly at the end and pretty unbelievable and actually, now that I think more on it, sort of ticked me off. I guess this is a 2.5 star read for me. The situation in which these characters find themselves in is my biggest issue. The reason for the big dumping/separation between the MC's. The fact that Harry let this shit continue to happen, even after college, astounded me. I know it happens, but I have a hard time believing that he never went for help. Okay. That's enough. If I go on, I'll end up telling you too much and spoil the whole damn book.
review 2: 3.5Micah is a midwife for his small
... moreEnglish village. The story begins with Micah helping his best friends, Sarah and Gary, birth their baby. I loved the relationship Micah has with Sarah – they are more like brother and sister, with all the bickering and snarkiness overlying loyalty of steel. They were awesome together. Micah is godfather to this new life and all is going well. This happiness is dampened when his meddling mother drags him over to meet the new neighbors, a lovely couple. When Micah comes face to face with the man who ripped out his heart on graduation day it’s all he can do to maintain a brave face. Kudos to his mom, Jenny, for not lashing into Harry right then and there. We get the story of how Harry and Micah met in college, their relationship and then how Harry was the cruelest, coldest man on the planet when he ended it. I read it thinking, Harry will never be able to redeem himself after these words. Of course, there is more to the story than meets the eye. It is here that I questioned a bit, because they were so in love in college yet Harry never once even mentioned his family? I understand why they wouldn’t visit or anything but keeping something that big, well, I wondered how committed Harry was back then. The bigger issue for me was just that Micah gave in too quickly. Micah has been heartbroken for six years! I felt like there needed to be more than the one big conversation about it and then everything was okay. I wish Sarah had been there for it – she would have made Harry squirm. The whole reason behind Harry’s actions is a bad one related to his family and I wondered how someone like this was in a position of power. I admit I loved the midwife aspects of the story! Micah is good at what he does and the whole thing was so interesting. less
