review 1: Some good, some badGood were the characters. Most of the time, they were likeableThe part I most disliked was unfortunately directly at the beginning and I nearly put the book aside right then. The book starts with the heroine, Catherine, deciding to pay a midnight visit to the hero, whom she doesn't know anything about except rumors that claim he is a ruthless murderer. Because of these rumors, she decides he is just the man to take care of her problem. So she blithly goes to his residence in the middle of the night, all alone, without anyone knowing where she is to hire him to kill someone for her. Considering she believes he is the kind of man who will kill a man without asking any question as to why for just a bit of money, her behavior is quite naive.Luckily, after tha... moret first scene, it becomes somewhat betterP.S. I was going to give it 3 stars but after just remembering the very stupid beginning, at least for now, I'll go with two
review 2: Loved it. The story was so engrossing I couldn't put it down. One of my favourite things that LH does in the book is that she addresses all possible plotholes and she deals with them more than satisfactorily. For example, the fact that Luke spent about 85% of the book convinced he loved Frannie and that he wanted to marry her was an obvious issue. Her clear reluctance to marry him was another one, but I'll excuse Luke's blindness to her true lack of willingness as the fact that his love of her and his desire to avenge her had pretty much been the driving force of his life. So, naturally, it would not have been easy for him to except that perhaps things had changed and that he had grown up and could expect more from his life. Most authors would likely have ended with Luke exclaiming that he had eschewed all supposed love he had for Frannie, but no LH makes him acknowledge the truth of his love beautifully and as what it was-a boyhood love, and one swirling in his desire to avenge her and return the care she's shown him and Feagan's other boys. He knows his love for Catherine is that of a man for a woman, and is perfectly comfortable admitting that to himself.Apart from that, I loved how he never really believed he was the real Claybourne, but had to gradually realize his grandfather had been right all along. And his few precious memories of his true childhood were heartwarming.Dodger's naturally a harder character to love at this point, but it helps that he clearly values his friendship/brotherhood with Luke. And regardless of his errors, his protectiveness was what ensured Luke stayed alive. I love that their friendship doesn't magically heal but they both have to work hard to work past their issues. And man oh man, that epilogue was beautifully written. So, all in all I love the world that LH has created with her Scoundrels and can't wait to read more about Jack, Frannie, Jim and Will, too. less
