review 1: There was nothing absolutely to dislike about this book (when I would have given it only two stars), but I cannot echo the reviewers who were enthusiastic about it. I could not feel empathy with the characters and found tedious the comparisons with "Rebecca" - the meeting abroad, the missing wife, even the episode with the dress. There seemed to be holes in the plot - surely the quarry was an obvious place to search for a body? How Sarah managed moneywise was never mentioned; the plans to escape to Cornwall immediately after Christmas Day etc;how had Neil managed to access Sarah's e-mails when her computer was down a well. Generally suspense, ghosts, mystery, crime novels are not for me and this, although more of a romance, followed the pattern where in the final ... morechapters there are denouements and revelations coming rapidly on every page. It was obvious that everything would turn out well, unless there was a major twist in the story. However I did not guess who the killer was at all and found it incredible that Sarah (already very fragile and distraught), could deduce who it was from seeing a name written down and realising how it could be corrupted into the name of Genevieve's lover. Not a book I could be bothered to read again.
review 2: From the cover and the blurb I was expecting this book to be a bit more light hearted than it was, but that wasn't exactly a disappointment. The story was pretty compelling and I found myself needing to finish it at all costs once I was just a few chapters from the end! However, I thought the book was to long and dragged a bit in the middle. I was also a bit confused as to it's genre-romance, thriller, crime? Overall, I enjoyed it but it wasn't a favourite. less
