review 1: After quite enjoying 'In Her Shadow' I picked up 'The Secrets Between Us' because it was touted as Douglas's best novel. It isn't! There were far too many holes in the story to make it believable and large segments of the prose made me cringe owing to the 'fluffy' language. The lack of explanation as to characters' motivations and how the story finally unravels was frustrating and felt far too convenient, ***Spoiler alert*** particularly Sarah's Investigation with Neil where evidence seems to spring up from nowhere. The premise was good; however, parts of the execution needed more work to prevent the novel slipping into farce. That said, the book was quite gripping, if only I could suspend my judgment, and I reached the end quickly.
review 2: This book was a pa
... morege turner, it was suspenseful and I did want to know what happened, but it was a little too reminiscent of Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. I felt a bit like it was a writing exercise rather than an original novel. I felt that I knew what was coming up before it did; the meeting abroad, the mysterious first wife, even the scene where she tries on the first wife's dress. I thought more could have been made of her unreliability as a narrator - I would have found it hard to resist the urge to subvert the ending and make our narrator mad, or Alex a murderer, rather than have a happy ending for the couple. less
