review 1: Not the strongest in the Inspector Gamache series, but still a pleasure to read. This one has a pretty typical setup for a mystery, the secluded locale, the bickering rich family, and concludes a bit saccharine for my taste, but, per usual, Penny imbues her mystery with more warmth, thoughtfulness, and depth than the genre generally displays. And her descriptions of the cuisine and setting are to die for and make you wished you lived in her version of Quebec, you know, if it didn't have all the murdering.
review 2: Louise Penny shows she can write completely irritating and despicable characters who make you want to reach into the novel to slap their awful faces. The backstory for several continuing characters is interesting here, as is their changing roles in
... morethis story. It's a tribute to Ms Penny's writing that if I liked this novel slightly less than some of her others, it's at least partially because I disliked some of the characters so much (despite her even-handed effort in most cases to give their horrible behavior reasons if not excuses). less
