review 1: The Long Way Home is Louise Penny's latest Gamache novel. Who would not enjoy retiring to the quaint village of Three Pines with its bistro, bookstore and population of world class characters: an award winning poet who handraised a duck, a highly regarded artist, and a retired psychologist who happens to own the bookstore are just a few of the eccentric residents. The village of Three Pines itself has a mysterious aura in that the location in Canada is always said to be near Montreal, but strangely it can't be found on any map. GPS does not work there and cell phone reception is tied to one small footprint in the village. Oz has nothing on Three Pines except the poppy fields, and perhaps not even that, considering how soporific and remote the village is. Any yet, th... moreings happen there, unspeakable things, that Inspector Gamache and his entourage are called on to solve. In The Long Way Home more of the action takes place out of Three Pines, but enough happens there to please readers who love the beautiful, snowy, hidden dot on the map of Canada. Reading the Gamache mysteries does require a certain level of appreciation for quasi-cozy stories, but this latest one touched on an appreciation of one of my favorite writers, Marilynne Robinson, and I truly applaud that.
review 2: Louise Penny's mystery series is like a piece of fine art. Her writing is literary while being emotional, deep but accessible. Start with the first, since each book layers more to each character, particularly Armand Gamache, Jean-Guy Beauvoir and the residents of Three Pines. The settings are so explicitly described they transport you to places you have never been. One of my favorite authors, consistently absorbing and thought producing books. less

I really enjoyed this book, as I always do in this series. The ending was a bit disappointing.
