review 1: I just adore this author. Even though he leaves you unsure whether you actually understand what's going on most of the time, the setpieces are so strong and vivid, the science fiction parts so solid, it always leaves me wanting more. There's always something lurking just beneath the surface, you feel like you're about to grasp it but there are no easy answers and no obvious explanations for anything here, which forces the reader to really engage and think over what just happened, what are the words on the page vs. what actually "happened".
review 2: The finale to Harrison’s trilogy is as confounding, obtuse, and beautiful as the rest of the series. His prose is crafted so impeccably and relentlessly it is hard to resist chewing over each line and word choic
... moree (it is also very discouraging for the amateur writer) and occasionally losing the plot. But with Harrison you know you are going to read it again, soon I might restart the trilogy and see how they work together. His imagery, imagination, and prose are on such a level that they put much science fiction (is there anyone else who writes in the genre recently that is comparable as a stylist, Wolfe, Mieville, Shepard, or Gibson?) and other fiction in its shadow. Jodorowsky and Lynch should have skipped Dune and waited for these books to adapt. Quantum physics, Gnosticism, and dream imagery mixed with cyberpunk, noir, depressing near future science fiction, and space opera for a dense, cinematic, and surreal nightmare. less

Weird, fascinating, hard to understand. Just like a typical M. John Harrison novel, then.

fairly unsatisfactory follow up to Light. fragmented but not in a good way.

Do any other living writers write prose as good as M. John Harrison?

Beautiful prose. But I had no idea what was going on.
