review 1: Madeline Hunter's stories are so layered and rich that you can't help but enjoy the read. Although some might find the romance a bit lacking in this one, the story more than makes up for it - otherwise, why would we have stayed up so late reading this? We couldn't put it down! We love that little details are parsed out bit by bit so that we're never given everything we need to figure out the mystery until the end. We're impressed that a somewhat unlikable character slowly becomes the hero and that our heroine isn't a Mary Jane. And it's intelligent enough that we don't feel like we're reading an idiot plot. As for the romance, it comes slowly and builds to a very satisfying finish. Brava!
review 2: I enjoyed this, but felt a bit of a disconnect. I'm not sure wh
... morey that was. Some of my thoughts after reading it were that both characters were a little cold or remote or haughty, I'm not sure which word is best. I think some of the narration seemed it was describing actions more so than thoughts and feelings, making it harder to connect. There was a preview at the end for the prior book in the series, which I haven't read, which described ambery as having a pleasing personality, but in this book he seemed brooding and arrogant, and I didn't like some of how he treated Cassandra. From all their negative thoughts of each other, it almost seemed unbelievable when they realized they loved each other- I think I needed a little more tender thoughts of each other before the big reveal, particularly on the hero's part. I did enjoy the action, and halfway through the book I was reluctant to put it down, as I eagerly wanted to find what happened next. I felt there were two issues that were not resolved as I would have wished- one is a major secret that directly relates to the heroine's family, and she is kept in the dark about it. That does not sit well with me. The other was a detail related to the death of a character that is referred to several times, but there is a pertinent detail that is never revealed- I am hoping it gets dealt with in future books in the series, which i plan to read. less
