review 1: 4 stars for this one because of the really enjoyable love story and the main characters, as well as the amusing interaction between the hero Kendale and his friends Ambury and Southwaite, the heroes of the previous 2 books in this series, as Kendale gradually falls in love the Marielle, the heroine, and asks his friends for advice regarding women.The 3 undercover subplots that the hero and heroine are involved in were less satisfying, mainly because only one of them (the release of the heroine's father from his imprisonment in France) is resolved at the end of the book. The other two subplots - the heroine's efforts to bring down the man who had imprisoned her father, and the hero's efforts to revenge himself on the French officer who had massacred the hero's military uni... moret, are basically abandoned, even though they take up a large amount of space and give the book much of its momentum. Maybe they'll be resolved in the next book in the series, although the prepublication blurb doesn't mention anything about them.
review 2: This one was barely a three. Marielle Lyon did have a secret and it did cause Gavin Norwood to think she was a spy but there was not good reason not to tell him what she was actually doing. Instead most of the book was spent on was she or was she not a spy for France. For me the story just limped and limped along. The tension needed for a really good story was missing. The romance was OK but the journey to the HEA was long and boring. Not at all what I expect from Madeline Hunter. less
