review 1: If I had noticed that it was the fourth book of a series, I may not have signed up for it on First reads. As a fourth book in this series, it may have been pretty good. For someone picking it up not knowing what had happened before, it was rather dull, a bit confusing and annoying. There have been times, when accidentally picking up later book in the series, I have obtained the prior books because I was enjoying the one I was reading, this isn't one of those times. This book would have been helped by a prologue, maybe. I got annoyed when reading when some previous event was alluded to, with little information. However my biggest complaint with the book is the heroine, Lydia. Her actions don't make sense; the blackmail at the heart of the book seems off; she has all the... morese friends but doesn't confide in them but the reasoning for not confiding isn't clear; and she just doesn't seem likable or interesting. The hero, was a bit more interesting but wasted on the book. I gave it two stars over giving it one star because, it might have been more enjoyable if I had read it after reading the other three books and getting a clear idea of the background.
review 2: I've always liked Madeline Hunter, but of all her series I like this one the least. in this book, I had t o work too hard to like either character. both came across as arrogant and somewhat unapproachable. Spoiler alert! It took too long for it to come out that Lydia had been in love with Ravenwood; she would have been more sympathetic sooner. Also, the story elements seemed very oddly woven together. Not nearly as good as the first if her series I read. less
