review 1: Juliet worries about everything in her life, from her parents’ arguments and the conflict between her two best friends to the school bully. When she moves into a new bedroom (her grandmother’s childhood room), Juliet discovers a painted tree underneath the wallpaper. Her grandmother explains that each of the animals in this “worry tree” can take care of different types of worries for Juliet while she is sleeping. With the animals’ help, Juliet eventually overcomes her seemingly insurmountable worries, assuring herself that she is “a capable person who can handle any crisis” (126).I did not like this book even a little bit. Saccharine and predictable, it minimizes the significance of generalized anxiety disorder and OCD, and it lacks an interesting plot or cha... moreracters to boot. While both the School Library Journal and Kirkus reviews praise Musgrove for her depiction of a “delightfully normal and realistically flawed family,” I found the family’s wackiness to be contrived and grating, and Juliet to be a meek, obnoxious character.I was also particularly disturbed by the fact that Juliet’s mother, a psychologist, took no action to address her daughter’s anxiety, which to me seems clearly beyond the bounds of “normal” worrying. Juliet’s anxiety-induced rash and her obsessive organization of her collections to soothe her worries suggest a severe anxiety disorder, perhaps OCD, that necessitates treatment beyond a painted tree. Although I appreciate the fact that Juliet is portrayed as brave and capable despite her worries, I believe that this unrealistic minimization of the seriousness of anxiety disorders is detrimental to children suffering from these disabilities.I do have to add one final positive note about this book. As a librarian, I cannot begin to express how much I appreciate the fact that the publisher included the following disclaimer on the worry worksheets at the end of the book: “Remember! If this book does not belong to you, you can do these activities on a separate sheet of paper.” That’s music to my librarian ears.
review 2: Jika saya berkata kepada orang sekitar bahwa saya pemalu, selalu saja ditertawakan. "Mana mungkin lo pemalu?", begitu kata mereka.Itu semua berdasarkan karena mereka tahu saya kerap membawakan suatu acara di depan umum dengan gaya ceria, lucu dan jahil. Saya memang sudah terbiasa membawakan acara sejak masih berseragam putih merah. Tapi apakah sekarang saya sudah tidak merasa malu, gugup atau cemas untuk membawakan sebuah acara?Saya masih malu, gugup dan cemas. Sangat mudah bagi orang lain untuk melihatnya ketika saya merasakan hal-hal tersebut, saya akan berkeringat di udara yang sebenarnya adem ayem saja. Dan itu cukup mengganggu saya. Biarpun saya telah melakukan beberapa tarikan nafas panjang sebelum memulai acara dan tentu saja berdoa, tetap saja saya masih merasa malu, gugup dan cemas. Tindakan yang paling ampuh adalah saya suka berdiri dan berjalan-jalan ketika membawakan acara. Maka dari itu saya lebih nyaman membawakan acara informal, karena bisa mengatasi malu, gugup dan cemas saya. Selain itu saya bisa mengekspresikan diri saya lebih jauh. Dan senang sekali membuat orang lain tertawa dan bahkan masih tersenyum ketika acarapun telah selesai.Saya tidak mau malu, gugup dan cemas itu mengalahkan saya untuk maju terus ke depan. Karena itu saya tak menganggapnya sebuah kelemahan dari diri saya. Saya jadikan itu pemacu diri saya untuk terus melangkah maju. Saya akan tetap lakukan pekerjaan tersebut walau membuat saya malu, gugup dan cemas. Hasil itu urusan belakangan, yang penting saya sudah berani untuk menghadapinya.
