review 1: Mirror Mirror by Marilyn Singer and Illustrated by Josee Masse is great for children ages 6 through 11 years old. When you open the book first you read the poems from top to bottom for one meaning then you reverse the lines and read again from bottom to top for another meaning of the poem. Marilyn Singer calls this reverso poems. I feel like this is a great way to bring poems into your classroom in a fun and exciting way! Students get to experience reading poems in a whole new way by also reading them backwards. It may be a fun challenge for the students!
review 2: Mirror Mirror: A Book of Reversible Verse My favorite verse was the Doubtful Duckling p[14-15]. I am bias to this particular one because it was one of my favorite bedtime stories as a child. Sin... moreger’s reverso poem was able to flawlessly express the duckling’s internal struggle. Masse’s illustrations throughout the book flow seamlessly and complement the poems in a very ingenious was. This illustration captures the essence of the poem to perfection. The duckling sees himself as a swan; the swan’s reflection becomes a duckling. I had the opportunity to read and share this book along a small group of 6th grade students. It was gratifying experience see my students, who have an aversion to poetry, enjoy poetry so much! This will definitely be a book I can use to capture my students’ attention during a poetry lesson.
