review 1: Tallulah’s Tutu is about a little girl just starting ballet that is waiting not-so-patiently to earn her tutu. After a few classes Tallulah gets fed up waiting for her tutu and decides she does not want to dance anymore! Unfortunately, everything from the neighbors dog to the hands of a clock reminds her of dancing. One day, she was in a grocery store and began dancing to the music over the loudspeaker. When she stopped dancing, everyone in the store was applauding for her! There was even a little girl there wearing a tutu. The girl in the tutu told Tallulah she wants to dance just like her! The next day Tallulah was back in dance class and vows to work hard until she gets her tutu. By the end of the story, Tallulah receives her tutu. The end of the book brings to mind t... morehe writing craft Fletcher (2013) speaks of in the chapter about endings. Fletcher speaks of a poignant ending by stating, a writer could end by,"a visual image to linger in the reader's mind" (p.98). Singer (2011) does this by explaining that Talluluh finally receive her tutu, but instead of it being the color she thinks she wants, the tutu is, "red as the roses blooming that June" (p.28). When I closed the book, I was still thinking about that red tutu and all that Tallulah went through to get it. I think this author does a great job not only with the ending but creating the character, using specific words and portraying the tension Tallulah feels, but there is something about that ending that just . . .lingers. The strategy I would use from this book is to leave the reader with a concrete detail at the end that will linger in the readers mind.
review 2: Tallulah desperately wants a tutu. She'll be a famous ballerina...with lessons. Mother agrees and soon Tallulah has begun. However, ballet doesn't start with a tutu. It starts with a lot of hard work and practice. While Tallulah loves to dance, she gets frustrated when she still doesn't have a tutu. She decides to give it all up, but dancing is in her heart and she makes a better choice. This is a wonderful book for all little girls who love ballet. It gives a realistic look at the work involved, introduces vocabulary, tells a heart-warming story, and has delightful watercolor illustrations that show people with realistic proportions. This is an excellent book. less
