review 1: I really enjoyed this book. It was a great reminder of the power of prayer. The author's premise is that God has many blessings waiting to shower down on you. They are there for the asking, if only we will ask. Not only that, He can bless us with far more than we can likely imagine. The author relates the story of the Israelites and how they tired of manna and wanted meat (Numbers 11). Quail fell from heaven....more than they could have ever imagined! The circle aspect of it is interesting. The idea is that we need to circle things we are praying for or about, like Israelites did when the caused the walls of Jericho to fall down. (Joshua 6) He also encourages the reader to circle miracles in the Bible. It is all built on the legend of Honi, a man who prayed for rain after s... moreeveral years of drought. He drew a circle and called down the rain. I thought it was interesting that he would start the book with a legend, rather than a biblical story, but it worked. All in all a good read. It is easy to read and has a lot of stories, both personal and biblical.
review 2: I found the reviews about this book interesting. At first, I was sorry I had read them before reading the book. As I was reading, however, and after i finished the book, I was glad I did because it gave me points to ponder as I read. Some said this was not theologically sound, an area where I feel I have a fair amount of discernment. I also don't believe this book is prosperity gospel. If one reads it carefully and in its entirety, the theme is that we pray boldly and big because we have faith in God's ability to answer those prayers. Those prayers ultimately honor Him, regardless of His answer. Throughout the book, Batterson repeats the theme that our prayers must be in line with and according to the will of God. At times, as I was reading, I felt overwhelmed. As I read the last few chapters, I became more inspired and moved by his words. I was also blessed that my church built a series around this book. That was a great help in putting the main ideas of The Circle Maker into perspective. I recommend this very inspirational book! less
