review 1: A blast of fast action entertainment! If you're a Tom Clancy enthusiast, then you will love Support and Defend. For all you Vicenza ABCT veterans, there is a cameo appearance, short but extremely significant, in the end by 173d ABCT. This is a new twist on the Campus team with Dom Caruso on a solo mission (or almost as Adara Sherman joins him on her first operational excursion) to avenge the assassination of an ex-IDF officer, linked to a US Government leak. Investigation of the leak leads to much more important stolen state secrets, which attract an international "wikileaks" type organization and multiple intelligence services vying for the goods. The book starts in India, then after an investigation in the US, leads to a chase across Central America and Europe. My ... morehats off to Mark Greaney - he has managed to continue the tradition of action, plausible scenarios (to a degree of course), and respect for military details which have characterized all the Tom Clancy novels over the past 30 years.
review 2: This was one of those books that started out with a bang, in the tradition of Tom Clancy, but ended up with a whimper. I have no idea how much input Tom Clancy had on this book before his death, but there was a place three quarters of the way through the book where I swear the writing style changed and the story lost me, forever. This place in the book was where any reality left the book, like a vanishing wind in sails. I struggled to finish the novel and the further I went, the more difficult it was. The best word I can describe the last quarter of the book is cheesy and unrealistic, i.e. the hero racing on a high speed chase through a blizzard on a motorcycle, please, please, please. One of the talents Tom Clancy had with such books as Patriot Games, Red October, and Clear and Present Danger was convincing readers the story could actually happen. Support and Defend was unconvincing. One thumb up. Mildly entertaining. less
