review 1: I've read the book and I'm halfway through the ten days. I think there's a LOT of good stuff in this book. I think it lacks a lot if you're a vegetarian trying to do it though because it requires protein in the form of meat, fish, tempeh, or tofu (no beans or legumes) at every lunch and dinner. I mean really, am I supposed to eat tofu and tempeh for TWENTY meals? Oh, I guess I can have eggs (not my favourite food) too. As a vegetarian who eats pretty healthily anyway (doing this for the sugar detox part) I'm finding it a challenge to eat the protein. I get plenty of protein normally and I definitely don't eat it at every meal. Maybe if I was trying to lose weight, it would be different, but I'm fit and at optimal weight. Just trying to kick the sugar habit. The book's inte... moreresting and it's concise, which is good. And the recipes I've tried really are quite tasty (and I'm a cook), so that's nice. I really like what he says and I think people with more health issues than I, and who eat meat, could really have great success with this. Oh, yeah, and as someone else mentioned, all the supplements and PGX seem like just something for you to spend your money on and buy from his site because it's easier. I'm not taking any of that, except magnesium which I seem to need.Update on Day 10 - Still think this would be good for people who need it, didn't make a huge difference to me (although, I did lose belly fat leftover from after a surgery). However, it gave me lots of things to think about in regards to "treats" and also just how I relate to food. The two biggest takeaways for me are that I don't really need grains under my stir-fries and that making meal plans for only 4 days at a time instead of the whole week will keep me from having meltdowns on about Day 5-6-7 when they always seemed to go awry.In regards to the vegetarian aspect mentioned above, I got his blood sugar solution cookbook and there are loads of veggie friendly recipes. Why he couldn't have had more in this book mystifies me. Almost everything was tasty though (except one of the smoothies! Bleach!)
review 2: Why do I keep reading this type of book? Diet Nirvana does not exist. Hard work, patience and persistence still are all that work. But, Dr. Hyman, who fills his books with lots of legitimate science, some comforting blame shifting and an assurance that exercise will not cure all, has written an easy to read to book that has huge nuggets of good information that aligns with some modern views on nutrition and weight control. However, he could not resist. He had to incorporate promotion of proprietary nutritional supplements into to his narrative... over and over...and over. Also, I became a more than a little suspect that all of his testimonials were written in the same writing style. I did jump over to his website after I listened to the audiobook and found more testimonials. I could practically read them in the voice of the book narrator, because the sentence structure was so similar to what I had listened to for hours. I also felt that Dr. Hyman addressed, but too easily dismissed the social aspects of eating. He did not give good advice on handling holidays, family parties, and other gatherings that are both social and revolve around food. Anyway, I am skeptical, but not closed to new ideas. I won't rush out and stock up on vitamins, protein powder or powder for a PGX power shake. I will [continue to] avoid carbohydrates and exercise regularly. One thing I did do? I bought some lavender oil to add to an epsom salt and baking soda very warm bath. Got to admit, I can't rave quite as strongly as those in his testimonials, but that bath did smell good and I was rather pampered by the experience. Read this book if you are diet book junky. Search for the nuggets of truth then do your best to avoid the blatant sales pitches for nutritional supplements. less
