review 1: With the new Daredevil Netflix series coming up, I found myself coming to the stunning realization that I didn't know all that much about Matt Murdock. Sure, I had seen the not-so-great Ben Afleck movie, but as I comic book reader I had never picked up a Daredevil title, and had seen The Man Without Fear make little more than cameos in the other comics I was reading. Having heard so many positive things about Mark Waid's run, I decided to try it out.And I am so glad that I did. This isn't just good. It's fantastic! In an attempt to recast Daredevil as a more lighthearted, swashbuckling hero, Mark Waid has delivered a highly entertaining series of comics that focus on two short arcs. The comic equally succeeds as both a high flying action series and as a character study of M... moreatt himself. I love how the comic is constantly showing us what life is like through Matt's eyes, from his radar sense to the little details he picks up thanks to his enhanced senses (want to seduce Daredevil? wear his favorite perfume). The attention to detail is what I think helps to elevate this other titles that are entertaining, but less memorable. This can be seen not only in showing us Matt's supernatural strengths, but the challenges he faces from being blind (he can sense the cars in the road, but he can't see what Taxi's are in service). Seeds of romance are also planted between Matt and a side character named Kristen McDuffee. I am curious to see where those will lead. The collection also features art from Paolo Rivera, who has a unique dynamic art style. Rivera's work is a great match for Waid's writing, which also helps to make this a more memorable book. I am quite happy I decided to pick up volume one of Daredevil from my library, and I am excited to read more.
review 2: Daredevil returns in this first collection of Mark Waid's run. Daredevil is for the most part known as a dark, brooding hero. Miller's legendary run really made the foundation, while writers like Bendis and Brubaker lay on the gauntlet of tragic and disheartening events. With all that in mind DD returns to NYC and the Marvel Universe with a surprisingly sunny disposition. Waid takes the character back, as we see both DD and Matt Murdock as less tortured souls and more of men looking to live life to its fullest. Waid not only brightens the tone for the world that are hero is in and the view he has of it, but he takes things to an interesting place by making Murdock constantly have to deal with a public that believes he is Daredevil. This often brings witty banter that brings a smile to your face. Here we see Matt attempting to reassemble his life, law-firm, and identity. Things do not go the best for Matt but he goes with the punches and keeps his head up. The story of this volume really revolves around two cases. First Matt and Foggy take a police brutality case that brings DD to face Klaw, master of sound! The second uncovers a conspiracy involving A.I.M, Hydra, and several more. Now even if you don't know a lot of the events that happen before Waid's run, you get enough to gather a picture and go along with the story. DD is great from front to back and often leaves you not only wanting more but having a better day if you really think about Matt's handling of all he has been through. less
