review 1: I enjoyed this book immensely. The characters are real, they are imperfect and they struggle with their relationships. Living in NY allowed an extra level of appreciation for Muriel's home town. She is an awkward, chubby, under loved young woman. She doubts her worth. Pia, Muriel's sister is the perfect, favored child. This all struck very close to home. As parent's we are not supposed to have a favorite child, although I love both of my children equally, my son is easier to parent and more empathetic than my daughter is; she and I are very different. I saw far too much of myself in Lidia's unacceptance of Muriel's choices and lifestyle. This book isn't really about death or secrets, it is about hiding who we are in order to please others and meet societal expectations. I ... morehope we can all have the rebirth that Muriel and Lidia do when they are finally able to accept themselves for who they are and love each other in spite of it.
review 2: A beautifully written emotional book. Muriel Sullivant is the third child in her family and has always felt unloved and unwanted. She can never live up to her beautiful, perfect sister Pia. Now they are grown up and Pia comes to visit Muriel and asks her to keep a devastating secret. Throughout the book we see glimpses of the past and how the family dynamics have played out over the years. We see how cruel Pia was to her sister when they were growing up and how their mother Lidia has made it very clear that her youngest daughter is a huge disappointment. My heart just broke for Muriel to read about all she had to endure growing up. Once Pia's secret is out, we find out toward the end, that there was another secret that helped to define this family and is one of the biggest reasons for how Muriel was treated growing up. I received this book as a First Reads winner on Goodreads. less
