review 1: I am not going to summarize this book because it has been done already by dozens of other reviewers and I have nothing to add in that respect. I will say that the book started out strong with the capture and imprisonment of Grey. But his rescue by the intrepid Cassie was far too easy, and yet, was still the highlight of the book. The story quickly lost steam from there, and no amount of steamy love scenes could remedy that. Grey's return to England and his family went rather smoothly and his PTSD symptoms were minimal. Though aside from sensory and culinary deprivation, I never saw him as being tortured per se. So it was difficult to feel as much sympathy for him as the author was striving for. Especially since he had no trouble in the bedroom, clearly having recove... morered his strength. And speaking of the loves scenes, there were far too many of them. I found myself skimming them after maybe the tenth encounter. In instances such as this book, less is definitely more. Quality over quantity. One thing I did like was the intelligence, strength, and self sufficiency of Cassie. But she must have lost a few brain cells between the sheets not to know how much Grey truly loved her. But then again, her cluelessness was a necessity to continue on with the second half of a draggy story. This book was average for the genre. I felt the author tried to present a credible story with likable characters. But I never felt much for either of the main characters and the profusion of anachronistic phrases was a deal breaker for me. I prefer the author's earlier work in the Fallen Angels series.
review 2: Maybe I've had a surfeit of these novels recently (I mark their shelf "Corsets & Courtship") but I'm getting able to predict the endings pretty well. I enjoy the idea that Good People get what they deserve and the Bad People get their comeuppance in the end... but these novels make me itchy for the new season of "Walking Dead" to hurry up and get started. You can't invest more than a cursory liking for people that you know will always be rescued in the end. That said, I liked Cassie more when she was living by the skin of her teeth and her wits than when she was all cosseted over and dressed in perfect clothing that fit perfectly and just so happened to be obtainable at the last minute. Just reinforces the idea that "All it takes is money." less
