review 1: This book was lovely, would make a nice readaloud book for any kids with a love of slightly offkilter language and interesting characters. For me, I'm not sure it will be a better series than A Series of Unfortunate Events (which it it is like, but gentler in its humor...) but it will find its audience. I think more words could ahve been used to develop the children more...at the end of the first book, they are little more than sketches.
review 2: I'm so glad that my sister introduced me to this series. Apparently there are already FOUR BOOKS! Where have I been? This first book was absolutely delightful: riffing off of Jane Eyre and stereotypical romanticized "governess" stories from the 19th century and pre-teen girls' passionate love for horse books like Mist
... morey of Chincoteague (I was one) - there were so many familiar resonances as I read. But, the writing is it's own, delightful, original voice that sometimes talks to the reader in an almost Lemony Snicket-way (but not annoying) and has innovative and unexpected twists and turns. The main character, Penelope Lumley, is a 15-year-old graduate of uncertain parentage from "The Swanburne Academy for Poor, Bright Females" who is hired as a governess for three children who actually do seem to have been literally raised by wolves - what a great way to start! I loved this and am excited to read the rest of them. (I love that the children refer to Miss Lumley as "Lumawoo" and the youngest of the three "Incorrigibles" calls herself "Cassawoof" and that they named her pet squirrel "Nutsawoo" - sooooo great! Love it!) less

Good story - and humorous. I just wish I had known it would end with a "to be continued."
