review 1: The problem with tie in books is always whether you know enough about both the title your reading and the things happening as part of the crossover event. In this case it worked very well for me and I enjoyed it as one of the stronger event tie ins I've read, but I can't honestly say whether I would have understood what was going on without having read "Fear itself". I feel parts of it at least can stand on its own very well. There was room for all the exploration I was missing in "Fear itself", like the exploration what was actually going on in Paris and how Tony was actually dealing with the dwarfs and building the mystic weaponry. The way it deals with his alcoholism and him falling off the wagon was engaging, but I probably enjoyed his conflict with Odin the most. A man... more of science dealing with a god like Odin is always an interesting set up and I loved the idea that the greatest sacrifice he could make was giving up his sobriety and dignity while calling out the god. The way he both antagonizes Odin and earns his respect in other ways was one of the most interesting part of the whole event for me. The dwarf language cursing was a nice idea, but got a bit tedious and gimmicky after a while. The parts with Pepper and the Hammer girls was a nice side story and kept the main story of the Invincible Iron Man book on track even through the event. My main complaint may still be the art. Even at this pint and after so many issues I can't say I like the way Larroca does the shading. His eyes and mouths always seems so very unreal and there could be more variety in faces, I suppose, because the only way to distinguish Pepper from Bethany Cabe was the very minor differences in hair style...
review 2: I picked this up from the library to get a little more insight into the events leading up to volume 9 of the main Iron Man series, and I'm glad enough I did so. This isn't anything remarkable, and reading this I have no real interest in the rest of the Fear Itself sequence. I did like a few of the things that this tackled, with Stark having to deal with the Norse gods, but it didn't really feel like a true Iron Man comic (hence it not being part of the main series, I assume). less
