review 1: Cannot find the English translation on here that I am reading. This is an unusual police detective, one that is traumatised and haunted by the fact he sees the dead while going about his business in 1920's Naples. The setting is amazingly detailed and atmospheric, the sense of foreboding with the rise of fascism in Italy vividly portrayed and yet it still maintains the 'whodunnit' element essential for a good detective mystery read. Maurizio de Giovanni has written a number of books featuring Comissario Riciardi and this is the third I have read-so I keep coming back for more!
review 2: The detective in this police procedural series is a nobleman who lives simply with an old retainer. He has a special supernatural power - he can see dead people and hear their l
... moreast thoughts/ was they last said. Every walk across town becomes an ordeal. He can rely on seeing the dead people for a period of time; then they gradually fade. This policeman, Commissario Ricciardi, is tormented by the loss of his mother, and by the dead people, to the extent that he avoids commitments in his personal life. Until now. Now, he has two choices; one is the self-possessed by unusually pleasant daughter of a local shopkeeper, the other a retired opera singer from the north who visits the South of Italy (Naples area) in order to catch the Commissario. She is beautiful, experienced, and shamelessly throws herself at him. I thought that the suspense about which woman would win his heart added to the charm of the book. The sidekick was amusingly dieting for fear that his wife loved the skinny grocer (she didn't). The victim was the second wife of a local big shot, and the era was the beginning of the fascist era. The murder was solved and solved again as the Commissario, aided by a wise priest, came to understand the workings of the human mind. Very good. less
