review 1: Max Lucado is not only an inspirational writer, but also a Pastor. This book is a question and answer type. Well-organized into different sections pertaining to: HOPE,HURT,HELP,HIM/HER, HOME,HAVE/HAVE-NOTS AND HEREAFTER.It is a compilation of sorts coming from people of all walks of life in the form of letters, emails, and phone calls, which questions directly to Max Lucado. His response is somewhat expected from a Pastor with years of experience---honest-to-goodness, simplicity and with biblical sense.I was amazed by the many questions that the author was receiving like how to handle a rude Christian friend or how to make peace with an ex-wife who was filled with hostility.I do not find his response pretentions or self-righteous. I feel reading him is like having a Father... more or an older brother around you that you can confide without being so judgmental. Someone who really listens and gives you some comfort. He tries his best answering delicate questions such as divorce, sex, death and dying with compassion. Some of his responses have appeared in his earlier books, so if you are a big Max Lucado fan who has many of his books, you might encounter some familiar words along the way.Another added bonus of this book is there is an advice page for aspiring writers or simply put how to be a Christian Writer.
review 2: I just finished reading the newest book by Max Lucado, called Max On Life: Answers and Insights to Your Most Important Questions and found it very interesting. Written from a pastor’s perspective, the book is an insider’s guide to common questions church members and friends ask their pastor. This book answers a total of 172 questions, divided by subject: Hope, Hurt, Help, Him/Her, Home, Haves/Have Nots, and Hereafter. The questions are often emotion filled, and Pastor Lucado answers with the wisdom in his heart. Often, he uses scripture verses to support his answers. I was delighted to see the author mix various scripture translations, each one perfectly matched the the question he was answering. While I agreed with about 99% of his answers, a couple of them left me questioning his response. In general, the answers to the 172 questions were quick responses and not lengthy sermons. His answers are clear, and his opinions are expressed. The format of the book is entirely “Q and A” questions and answers. Some questions from the book include Question 73: How do we know what is a command and what is cultural?, Question 133 Does my work matter to God? or Question 169, Does hell really last forever? Lucado covers calamities, baptism, sin, forgiveness, grace, sex, marriage and family- under the label Max On Life. The reading is light, sometimes humorous, and not too deep. If you are looking for biblical theology and bible study, try a different book! If you are looking for deep personal growth, you’ll like his book Fearless much better. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher Thomas Nelson via their Book Sneeze program for bloggers. less
