review 1: Not that I have much knowledge or experience with manga, but I think I picked this one up based off of a short summary and recommendation I read online. I was curious about the gender play which is what initially intrigued me... but that's about all I could appreciate from this manga. Everything else is pretty stereotypical in terms of gender and heterosexual relationships, and then all the forcefulness and not to mention rape at the end was pretty awful. The idea of gender play that I thought was going to be there from start to finish just withered in front of my eyes.
review 2: I absolutely love Shinjou Mayu's work, especially Sensual Phrase. When I realized this was by her, I hunkered down into a big comfy armchair expecting to have my mind blown.It wasn't b... morelown. Before I start having people object to my review, let me explain my stance.The artwork in this was amazingly beautiful, just as you'd expect something by SM to be. She very lovingly illustrates her books, bringing the characters to life & helping to draw you into them. In this aspect the book was absolutely wonderful & I just couldn't get enough of it.As far as story goes, it's a great idea & I think it was pretty well done for the most part. Where the book went wrong with me was that it tried a little too hard to introduce far too many characters & situations at once. What makes some of her other work so wonderful is that she eased into the large cast & the various situations. I love series where we have a large ensemble but this just felt a little jumbled at times. Eventually everything settles down to where the main 3-4 characters come into focus but the beginning just felt really scattered to me & it just took a while for everything to "work" in my opinion.All things considered, it's still good & I'm definitely looking forward to reading the second volume. This isn't Mayu's best work but it's something that I'd still recommend to anyone who loves a good romance. less
