review 1: A contemporary story of how easily a young girl can get seriously lost in our society. Not lost physically, but mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Cyberbullying is part of the problem, but the biggest problem today is parents who care more for their own dramas, than their children's well-being. Not only are the children being bullied lost, but also the bullys. Yet, SO FAr Away, is a story of one adult's caring can change a child's future. ONE. It doesn't take a village of adults to make a young person feel cared for, sometimes one who really is there can be enough. I liked thhis book, and will recommend it to others.
review 2: The cover, comments from other authors and title of my edition are quite misleading, as I was expecting sort of a mid-century co
... moreming of age saga, having not read the jacket info. Essentially, this is a story about bullying (online) and how a young girl tries to escape a difficult situation by researching her family history is befriended by an older archivist chased by her own demons. I didn't get the point of weaving in the side story of a distant relative's fall from grace - the combination didn't work for me. Still, good writing and a compelling look at loss, grief and the scary ways kids sometimes use technology. less
