review 1: This is quite an odd - and yet, strangely compelling - story. I began listening to it during a road trip, and was home before the book was over. I was intrigued enough to find it at the library and immediately download it to my kindle. It was a quick read, and yet I find myself strangely unsatisfied with the ending. I spent the latter half of the book waiting for a climax, and none was forthcoming. I'm glad Pell found two of her sisters, Jack, and finally, Bean...but it just wasn't as exciting a reunion as I hoped for. So, huh. Weird. But mostly good.
review 2: The story of Pell, who abandons her abusive home and future husband on her wedding day. This story takes place in Victorian England, where she is immediately considered a "fallen woman" for being on her
... more own. Her journey is surprising and sad and wonderful as she discovers where she fits in now that her preplanned life is in a shambles. The only problem I have is that there are some parts that seem too modern and feminist for the time period. less

I enjoyed it, but the ending is sad, and you don't come to connect with the character very much.

It's like a Bonnie Jo Campbell book for teenagers. Bloody brilliant.
