review 1: This is the second of this paranormal investigations series, and this time it's not Chris and his Consort, the Demon Sable Brennan, that take centre stage, but Johnnie Goodnight, the human adopted son of a Dracula, and his bodyguard. Unlike the first book, the cases he investigates are all connected and do follow a chronological order... and are more centred on Johnnie and his family. I really like these characters, and it was good to see Phil is still investigating, and to get to see Chris, Doug and Sable again. Definitely a series I shall keep reading.
review 2: I enjoyed this installment of the series quite a bit more than the first volume (Dance with the Devil). Although ostensibly written with the same structure -- one "case" per chapter -- it was actua
... morelly much less fragmented, and much more continuous, than the first book was. And that, in turn, made it much easier for the author to build dramatic and emotional tension, and for the reader to become immersed in the book.I liked the character of Johnnie and his emotional life throughout the book. He's a sort of feral cat character, always feeling like an outsider, always having a hard time trusting others, and always trying to shut himself away emotionally -- and I have a very soft spot for feral cats. The "mystery" surrounding the true identity of his lover was rather obvious, but still pretty satisfying, and the arc of the plot kept me interested from beginning to end.On the downside, the logical implications of Derr's worldbuilding details still don't really work out, something I also complained about with the first book. For instance, this apparently takes place roughly 26 years after important episodes in the first book -- yet we see no sign of technological or cultural advancement in that time. Heck, it's never even made clear whether this is meant to be essentially our own world with hidden "abnormal" beings added, or if it's just a vaguely similar secondary universe. However, unlike the first book, I was engrossed enough in the story to let those sorts of problems fall by the wayside, for the most part. It's a fun read, just don't think too hard about it. less
