review 1: The Gorgon in the Gully is Melina Marchetta's first book for younger readers and it is great. I would recommend this book for fans of her other novels as it centres around the character Danny Griggs, aka Jonah Griggs' (from On the Jellicoe Road) younger brother. So there are many crossovers and little bits and pieces Marchetta has included for her older fans. An easy read, as it's aimed at primary school-aged children, but fun nonetheless. It's a cheap and quick read, give it a read!
review 2: Beautiful story. Loved every minute of it. Danny was engaging and incredibly real as were his school experiences and friends. His fears and blind spots are things almost anyone can associate with. The middle portion and toward the end actually had me choking up in happine
... moress at what Danny was doing instinctively. Every kid needs a Danny in their life. I hope my son can be a Danny to others. I love the importance that family, friendship, and the perspective of truth hold in this book. Lovely, engaging story and I hope Marchetta writes more children's books in the future. less
