review 1: I really enjoyed this book. I like sci fi / fantasy novels and thought this created another world to set this story in without making the descriptions of the setting take away from the plot. I also liked the slight questioning of what it is to love and how much of life partner/ romantic love is bound up by gender/sexuality. But that was really a tiny part of just a jolly romp of a detective(ish) story. Liked it enough to try other titles by this author.
review 2: The conversations between the protagonist and the villain were just painful. I realize that they have purposely limited worldviews, as this is the source of conflict in the book, but I just had to skip some of the attempts at philosophical discussion. That said, the world created here is fascinating
... more and the characters from the future are generally very likable and intriguing. While I liked the attempt to incorporate some fundamental questions of gender and attraction, I think these could have been fleshed out more, and I find the romantic attractions in the book highly frustrating. less

It was fairly entertaining, but got tired at the end.
