review 1: Bombproof was my first Michael Robotham novel, and it was quite an intense ride. Sam MacBeth has recently been released from serving time in prison for a crime he did not commit. Only, the bad guys don't know that. They think he's something he's not. As a result, he gets mixed up in a plot that can only lead to more trouble. On the run from the police who think he is a terrorist after the train he was on blew up, Sami must find a way to clear his name. Unbeknownst to him, he has a little help on his side. Retired police detective Vincent Ruiz is also on the case.Bombproof is on the violent side. The author pulls no punches. It is dark and at times quite crazy. Yet, there is also a bit of humor mixed in, which takes some of the edge off. Sami is one of those guys... more you can't help but feel sorry for and want him to come out on top.
review 2: Bombproof, by Michael Robotham, b-plus, Narrated by Sean Barrett, Produced by Hachette Audio, downloaded from audible.com.This is the story of the anti-hero, Sami Macbeth. Sami is always in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sami is in a get-away car waiting for his friends, the jewel thieves, to return. But somehow he ends up with the reputation for cracking an uncrackable safe and stealing the jewels. He didn’t do any of that, but because his lawyer argues for him to plead to a lesser offense, he ends up in prison for three years where he allows this false reputation to protect him from the other prisoners. When he gets out, he is in immediate demand by a mob family trying to save their son from conviction, and he is asked to get into the evidence room at the Old Bailey. He doesn’t really know how to do that, so ultimately he blows the room up to get the evidence out. He then gets on a train underground with the evidence. Unbelievably, the train is bombed. When running with the evidence from the train, the police try to stop him and he says he has a bomb, which he doesn’t. The rest of the book involves this hapless anti-hero being chased as a terrorist and involves several shootings. It is funny and includes mention of the people usually in Robotham’s books, but this is a stand-alone. I like his regular series better. less
