review 1: Definitely a delightful and sinister ending to the trilogy. Serial killers on the loose, betrayal, torture, insanity, and revenge make it a dark book, but still with that marvelous enchantment that makes it impossible to put down no matter how scary things get. Even with the dark themes, the writing is never crass or vulgar. The gross things, like finding a dead body, are handled delicately, which also makes them more psychologically overwhelming and frightening.I adored Rowan and Tanya more and more as I read each book! Every character is so unique and complex.Such a beautiful, thrilling book, full of sensational plot twists and lovely moments! It's such a mixture of things terrifying and exquisite.
review 2: Redditgifts Book Exchange 2014 This was quite a
... moren enjoyable trilogy overall, all three of the books individually and as a set were good reads. Technically they could probably be read separately, though the reader would be missing quite a bit by doing so or by reading them out of order. This was a strange ending to the trilogy, as it seems quite a few loose ends were left untied, but I may have misunderstood and Harrison may have been planning this as an ongoing series, not a trilogy. I think I may have enjoyed this book more than the second one, though I've read several books in the intervening time, so it's difficult to recall my exact feelings about the middle book. I do feel that the reactions and responses of people in this book were more realistic, more accurate to life. And the action didn't take nearly as long to get moving, nor did the resolution involve nearly as many easy coincidences. I'm quite pleased with Tanya's character growth throughout the series, and Rowan's as well, though to a lesser extent (it's difficult to properly expand a character who has been through years of trauma and fear, because changes would come more slowly for her than for other people, so that was totally realistic). Fabian was given less opportunity to mature and change, but he was also a less interesting character. I wish Tanya had had a bit more focus in the 2nd and 3rd books, as she was so important in the first, but clearly the author felt that Rowan, with her history and background, was more interesting to give attention to. The whodunit aspect of this book was well done, suspicions split amongst multiple characters with the reader having the opportunity to figure it out for themselves, but also not feeling as if they were oblivious if they were unable to do so. Overall, I'd recommend all three books, preferably read in the proper order for best enjoyment. less
