review 1: This new series by Michelle Paver is sure to be a favorite for fans of the Percy Jackson series. Powerful warriors are chasing young Hylas and he is forced to leave home. As Hylas searches for his missing sister he meets a mysterious stranger who gives him a bronze dagger. On his quest he teams up with Pirra, the daughter of a high priestess, and a dolphin. Hylas must discover why he is being hunted and find his sister before it's to late!
review 2: I really liked this book. It's definitely for fans of Bronze Age fantasy/fiction (think Game of Thrones).Michelle Paver is a good writer, and she makes her characters believable, even the dolphin! Yes, one of the main characters is a dolphin and, of course, he's a good guy. Hylas, a poor goatherder, finds himse... morelf (and all other outsiders) the prey of the vicious Crows, a warrior tribe; his dog is murdered, his sister lost and he has been shot in the arm with an arrow but has escaped. While on the run, he finds a dying man, who gives him a bronze sword. This is no ordinary sword, but the fulfillment of a prophecy and its magic (or curse) leads him to a mysterious island and an escaped young priestess. Together they fight the spirits, the murderous Crows, and try to understand how they fit into the powers moving the earth. Sure to be the beginning of a series, this first book can stand on its own. Well researched and interesting, Paver spent many months in the Greek isles, studying the land and its history during the time of Atlantis. middle school/YA less
